The Forum is please to support the Agricultural Leaders' Health and Safety Action Group – a group from across the industry who want to make farming safer – which was launched at an event in Parliament today.
The Group's founding members have committed to learn from each other's experiences in health and safety, to improve the performance of their own business, and to reach out to the wider sector to help provide tools and support.
The idea of creating a leadership group to tackle agriculture's high injury rate was spearheaded by Forum member Steve Carden, CEO of Landcorp and was supported by the Forum. Several other Forum organisations were critical in breathing life into the concept, including LIC, Ngai Tahu Farming, AsureQuality, Ravensdown, Ballance Agri-Nutirents, Fonterra, ACC and WorkSafe.
Several other Forum members and large agricultural organisations today signed up to the group, including Federated Farmers, Beef + Lamb NZ, PKW, Silver Fern Farms, FMG, Dairy NZ and Farmlands.
The intention is to grow the group's membership as widely as possible to include agricultural businesses and individual farmers, and to build on the existing farming networks.
The group is looking at running regional workshops in the first quarter of 2017. These will cover two initial projects. The first involves having an agreed set of objective data and then mining it to better understand the sectors' problems and what actions might be required. The second project is looking at the issues around working with contractors and what can be done to keep both contractors and farmers safe.
